Sometimes, you have to forego the massive trade show displays that can splash your company’s message across the floor space. Perhaps it’s the cost of the displays, or the limited floor space available on the convention floor. Whatever the case, with a little trade show marketing chutzpah, you can get your message across loud and clear. Here are 4 tips for using small displays to make a large splash.

Tip #1 – Show Smiling People

You have limited space with which to work. Maximize your chances of getting trade show attendees’ attention. Use pictures on your display that show people smiling while using your products. It has a powerful psychological impact on others (we want to know other people are happy using a product we’re thinking about buying).

Tip #2 – Simplicity Sells

Think of the displays you’ve seen at your competitors’ trade show booths. Often, the visual space is crowded, busy, and filled with so many words and graphics that it takes effort to find the message. Keep your small displays simple and clean. Don’t clutter them with excess words or graphics. In a sea of noise, simplicity is memorable.

Tip #3 – Create A Theme

Use a little trade show marketing creativity and design a memorable theme. For example, if you have a booth at a trade show in Newport Beach, use images that remind attendees of the beach. It grabs their attention. They’re walking by your competitors, looking at their displays and are bored stiff. Make yours different. Don’t be surprised if you see smiles on the faces of those looking at your trade show displays.

Tip #4 – Dress It Up

Just because your trade show displays are small doesn’t mean they have to look like yesterday’s pizza box. Dress it up! Use some material and make theater curtains for your displays. Set it on a table that has silk draping over the side. Make it shine so it grips the attention of passersby.

Trade show booths are expensive. Plus, the cost of the displays can be outrageous. But, there’s plenty you can do to keep your trade show marketing costs down so you don’t blow your budget. It just takes a little creativity. Below, I’ll give you 3 ideas you can use at your next trade show to preserve your cash flow.

Idea #1: The Walking Billboard

Thousands of trade show attendees walk by booths and fail to notice the signs. It’s natural. We develop a certain blindness to stationary signs during the chaos of a trade show. But, here’s where a little ingenuity kicks in. Create a sandwich board with the name of your business and the benefits that your product delivers. Either wear it yourself or pay someone else to do it right outside your booth. It grabs attention and doesn’t cost much.

Idea #2: Working With Trade Show Enemies

Savvy trade show marketing involves doing what others aren’t. Before the trade show, contact 1 or 2 of your competitors who are planning to have booths at the show. Strike a deal with them. Trade fliers. Place their fliers on your booth and have them place yours on their booths. No company can be everything to everyone. This is an opportunity to leverage floor space without having to pony up the extra cash for another booth.

This idea works even better if you can identify 1 or 2 other companies with complementary products. For example, if you sell state-of-the-art mail servers, strike a deal with another trade show booth owner who installs Exchange. The referrals are built-in. It’s a win-win situation.

Idea #3: The Friendly Email

You’d be surprised by how many business owners fail to contact their best customers and strongest leads before going to a trade show. Send them an email and ask them to stop by your booth. It takes 5 minutes to write the email and won’t cost you a dime. If they’re already planning to attend the trade show, it’s a great opportunity for you to either gain a new customer or to build relationships with current customers.

The further you stretch your trade show marketing budget, the greater leverage you’ll enjoy from your efforts. When you walk by other booths, notice how other companies are spending their budget. People have a short attention span, so try to wrap up the demonstration after about five minutes go by. A short demonstration helps to entice them into wanting more information. Before people leave, try your best, with out being pushy to get the attendees to handle your product.

If you have a superior product, you might want your assistant to quickly demonstrate a competitor’s inferior item and then immediately perform a demonstration with your top-quality item.

When showcasing the product, stress the benefits attendees can achieve by purchasing your item. Learning about benefits is typically more compelling than learning just about the features.

During the product demonstration, tell a few quick stories regarding actual customers and the benefits they received from your merchandise. Unique stories work the best.

Make sure the audience you have attracted is rewarded for spending their time watching your trade show product demonstration. Offer them a discount or perhaps a two for one deal. Provide them a giveaway item that is associated with your product.

Let’s take a look at some easy trade show promotion ideas you can utilize to compel people to walk into your booth.

One of the easiest trade show promotions is offering free food. Make sure it’s tasty and somewhat unique. (Don’t pass out the standard chocolate chip cookie!) Frankly, nothing beats the aroma of fresh popped popcorn or the visual of an antique popcorn machine. It is not only inexpensive, but also effective marketing. Another excellent choice is custom-labeled bottles of water. Trade show attendees are often thirsty — making a cold bottle of water difficult to pass up!

Trade Show Promotions – Contests

Host a booth contest that offers a noteworthy prize. If the winner receives nothing but a firm handshake it might not be a successful contest. It’s best to offer a prize that is associated with your business, however, a high-tech gadget can also attract attention to your trade show booth.
